Biofertilizer Technology

Biofertilizer Technology typically means the production and application of efficient, region specific quality culture of biofertilizer. But for the proper functioning of biofertilizer in the farmers’ field several other subjects are integrated with biofertilizer aiming to sustainability of soil fertility and consequent decrease in the cost of agricultural production. 

Soil Testing & Fertiliser Recommendation

With a realization that the loss of natural fertility of soil is due to excess and unregulated use of chemical fertilizers and so soil environment should be maintained properly for the proper functioning of biofertilizer, the service of soil testing must reach the grass root level. For this purpose a model was developed here to provide soil testing services to the farmers at grass root level and enabled entrepreneurs to start their own business. In addition to testing of N, P, K, pH, EC and OC, this centre also provides the assessment of micronutrients. Proper management of soil is an important issue in biofertilizer technology. With the development of societal method of soil testing, the institute could reach the farmers level with soil testing facility. The VIB knowledge workers, trained rural youths, are involved in collection and analysis of soil samples.

Case Study

Story of Mrinmoy Pramanik

After finishing my course on Biofertilizer TechnologyI started an innovative little enterprise. I consisted of persuading the farmers in his neighbourhood for soil testing. I use to collect the soil samples for a small fee, get them analyzed scientifically at VIB and based on the results recommend the right fertilizers and quantities. Today I have around 400 clients. Their numbers are increasing because the farmers have seen a distinctive improvement in their output as well as a reduction in the fertilizer costs.  

 

Selection of region specific microbial strains to be used as biofertilizer

Through a three step method, laboratory testing, pot experiment and field trial, the region specific strains of different biofertilizers have been selected for different agro-climatic zones. 

Development of Germplasm Bank

VIB has realized that a germ-plasm bank of active organisms is necessary sustainability of this centre in future terms of commercialization of bio-inputs supply and supply of suitable strains to the rural entrepreneurs. Emphasis was given to collect/isolate, purify, document and preserve the germ-plasms.

Azolla-6, Blue Green Algae-490, Rhizobium-17, Azotobacter-38, Phosphate Solubilising Microorganisms-46 and Vasicular Arbuscular Mycorrhyzae-2.

Evaluation & Selection of Suitable Strains in Zone Specific Manner

This is one of the most important tasks in Biofertilizer Technology. Suitable strains of different biofertilizers are selected for specific agro climatic zone through, laboratory analyses, pot experiments and field experiments. Azolla microphylla has been selected for all the zones of West Bengal. Azotobacter chrococcum Strain No. VIB-1 for coastal alluvial zone; Azotobacter chrococcum Strain No. VIB-8  for  laterite zone, and Azotobacter chrococcum Strain No. VIB-3 for damodar alluvial and gangatic alluvial zone. Strains of phosphate solubilising bacteria have also been selected for the above zones. 

Promotion of Biofertilizer Application

Different aids have been developed for the promotion of biofertilizer application. These include Instructional manual-1, Promotional films-3, Posters- 5, Booklets-3, Leaflets-5. Because of promos, acceptance of microbial biofertilizer is increased. 

Production & Distribution of Biofertilizers

   

A simple but scientific production vessel (fermenter) has been introduced from ICRISAT, Pathancheru, AP for the production of bacterial biofertilizers (Rhizobium, Azotaoabcer, PSB). The microbial biofertilizer produced are carrier based and we have standardized the production technology of liquid biofertilizers.

 

Case Study

Story of Rajkumar seth,

Dhanyakhali, Hooghly, West Bengal I started with Rs.10000 and one month’s training at VIB. My only source of raw material was locally available organic waste. Within 3 years I started my own biofertiliser factory with organic industrial waste. Now our annual turnover is 15 to 20 lakhs. 

Integrated Nutrient Management

A package of Integrated Nutrient Management in rice based cropping system has been developed here for minimization of chemical fertilizer application without any decrease in yield. This package contains chemical fertilizer, organic manure and biofertilizers.

Azolla-Fish-Rice Culture

The program of Rice-Fish-Azolla culture was undertaken with a DST sponsored project. The main S&T component of this project is application of Azolla in rice field, use of Azolla as feed of fishes and release of plant nutrient as excreta of fishes. Different models for Rice-fish-Azolla culture in deep water rice system were tested in Sagar block, their techno-economic viability was analyzed and these models are now for large scale demonstration in 40 villages of Sagar Island. 

 

Organic Farming

A trial of organic farming in Rice- Sunflower cropping system is being carried out in the Institute field at Nimpith. It is noted that in the third year the yield of Rice and sunflower is 75% as compared to that by the conventional chemical input based farming. With the technical guidance of Dr. O.P. Rupela, Advisor, FAO, large scale Organic Farming is contemplate at Kaikhali. 

Vermicompost

VIB integrated biofertilizer technology with vermicomposting as soil organic content is an important factor for the efficiency of biofertilizer and vermicompost is an efficient, economical and reliable source of soil organic matter. Integration of biogas with vermicomposting where biogas slurry, rich in decomposing bacteria used as inoculum for primary decomposition of organic waste before vermicomposting. In addition to this earthworms are also used for production of vermiwash rich in plant growth promoting substances. Spraying of vermiwash on plants enhances its growth promoting substances. Spraying of vermiwash on plants enhances its growth and productivity.

The awareness building program organized with the support from Khadi village and Industrial Commission, the promotion of vermicompost has increased dramatically. Vermicompost has been produced and supplied to different parts of Sunderban and other regions
